Speed reading is one of the best ways to enhance your literary reading comprehension as well as speed rate. There are several concepts and guidelines to use that you can enhance your speeding reading well. Speed reading is a speed learning technique and can be used to actually enhance reading speed by nearly a hundred times the average reading rates. Follow the list below for speed reading techniques.

1. Get rid of all your distractions. This means that you need to have a nice, quiet area in which to speed read. Without that vital element, your brain will have a harder time to focus on actually retaining the information that you'll read. Comprehension of the words should be as important as speed reading, and a peaceful environment will boost your retention levels greatly. Try to use earphones whenever you are in especially noisy environments or in a room with several people talking.

2. Learn how to distinguish wheat from chaff. In any kind of study material, there's often an introduction or a filler paragraph sometimes. You can skip this over and get right to the stuff you need to. If you know where the wheat is, you can get right to the good stuff and merely skim your eyes over the chaff. Chances are, you've never read the book before and might not be sure of what to skip. You can decide this by scanning the contents before you commit to reading. Anything that doesn't get to the subject you are reading about is probably fluff.

3. Train yourself to stop rereading. Most readers do not even realize that they are rereading a lot of the words they read. It's hard to stop once you're in a habit. Train your eyes not to go back to the earlier phrases. Keep reading. Try this at first even if you're not retaining anything. Once you get used to it, you can go ahead and retain as you stop looking back. Rereading actually causes the brain to retain less of the information you are studying.

4. Time yourself during the process. Time yourself while you're in the first pages and while you're deep in the training process. Have a stopwatch handy and hit the timer once your eyes are on the page. See how long it takes to read. If it takes you a while at the beginning, don't be concerned. With practice, you can use this vital element of speed learning and speed read every time you open a book.
